5 herbs for protection
Below you will find a list of 5 herbs for protection and the simple ways in which you could use them for protection.
Rose
Rose petals are by far one of my favourites to use when it comes to witchcraft. I just love their aroma!
Despite being commonly associated with attracting love, they are powerfully potent when used for their other properties…
Not only can they be used as one of the many herbs for protection, they are also great for self-love and glamour magick too.

Add some dried rose petals into a mini drawstring bag and carry it with you for protection, you could even place it in your car for safe travels.
Rosemary
Rosemary is another one of the many great herbs for protection. I love how versatile it is.
Commonly used in cooking, rosemary is also used in haircare for hair growth and skincare due to its anti-inflammatory properties!
You can even use rosemary as an alternative to sage or incense when burned and used in smoke cleansing to purify your space. (Remember to practice fire safety & use a fireproof dish!🔥)
A simple way that you can use rosemary for protection:
Add some rosemary sprigs to your bath for protection and purification.
Check out this spiritual bathing guide which features an energy cleansing recipe that includes rosemary.
Cloves
As well as being used for protection in general, cloves work wonders when intended to protect against and banish the evil eye.
Cloves are also great when used as physical remedies such as oral health – check out this post here which teaches you how to make a zero waste non-toxic clove mouthwash containing just a minimum of 2 ingredients.
A simple way to use cloves for protection:
Add a few dried whole cloves to a simmer pot alongside similar festive herbs and spices such as cinnamon and star anise… the perfect activity for the holiday season!
Basil
Commonly used in recipes, basil is a great herb for kitchen magick!
In witchcraft, it can be used when calling in wealth, prosperity and of course, protection.
Dried basil is a great way to incorporate this versatile herb into your practice as it tends to last a while. When dried, it is great for sprinkling into spell jars and even dressing candles.
A simple way to use basil for protection:
Sprinkle a small amount of dried basil onto a white tea light candle for a simple protection spell – you could even carve a protective sigil into the wax if you wish to.
(Remember to place candles on a fireproof tray before lighting and don’t leave lit candles unattended, especially when incorporating herbs.)
Black pepper
Black pepper is a great go-to herb for protection. It is super affordable and commonly available in most stores.
It can used to protect against and banish negative energies.
