How to make a spiritual bath for energetic cleansing and everything that you need to know about spiritual bathing.
A spiritual bath is a great go-to ritual to add to your spiritual hygiene routine.
I love to put an hour or so aside that is centred around the ritual itself, especially when I feel like I need a pick-me-up. Often this looks like doing some quick cleaning around my space to preparing my ingredients before taking the bath and winding down ready for a good night’s rest.
I always wake up feeling refreshed with a kick of motivation especially when I’ve been feeling some stagnation or heavy energy.
What exactly is a spiritual bath?
A spiritual bath is an intentional bath that can be used for different purposes such as cleansing, protecting and attracting. Tools such as herbs, crystals and oils that correspond with the intention are chosen and added to the water to invoke and further amplify the intentions.
Another way to make a spiritual bath as opposed to simply adding the herbs straight into the water is to boil a pot of water and allow the herbs to soak for 20-30 minutes. This mixture can then be strained and added into a bath – a bonus if you’d prefer to not have to clean out the herbs from an empty tub after you’re done!
You can also take a muslin drawstring bag or an organza bag and add your ingredients to it. The bag can then be added to the water, placed around the tap or you can even attach it to the shower head if you don’t have a bathtub.
Spiritual bathing throughout history
Spiritual bathing rituals have been around for thousands of years and are present across a range of different cultures. It is believed that the ancient Egyptians participated in cleansing rituals such as ritual washing which involved the use of incense, oils, fasting and incantations to name just a few. Queen Cleopatra is also said to have bathed in milk, honey and essential oils as part of her frequent beauty rituals!
The Vikings were known to have had beliefs surrounding spiritual hygiene. They believed that dirt was linked to spiritual impurity and although in comparison to modern times, they didn’t bathe as frequently, they still however believed that bathing and washing purified them spiritually as well as physically.
The element of water in witchcraft
The element of water is a powerful force representing emotion, psychic abilities, purification and much more.
In witchcraft, water is used in a variety of ways such as using it to cleanse altar tools. Bathing in water especially when blessed with a specific intention is incredibly cleansing and rejuvenating to the mind, body and spirit.
Other common ways of incorporating this element into your practice include making and using moon water, storm water or even infusing your own for a specific purpose. For example, adding salt for purification when mopping the floors of your home or even using rose water in rituals to increase self-love.

Speak an incantation or affirmations as you bathe
How to take a spiritual bath
Step 1. Decide on your intentions for the ritual (e.g. cleansing your energy in general, cleansing away anxiety, removing evil eye etc.)
Step 2. Gather your ingredients and tools
Step 3. Rinse out the bath and then start to fill it up with water
Step 4. Add in your ingredients one by one with intention
Step 5. When the water is ready, immerse yourself in it and soak for 20-30 minutes
Tip: Visualise the negative energy washing away and as you get out, visualise it going down the drain
Notes
- If you have sensitive skin, a medical condition or are pregnant, you may want to be a little extra mindful when it comes to selecting your ingredients as some herbs/oils can be unsafe to use.
- If you’re making a batch with herbs to store for continued use, make sure that the herbs are completely dried as if not, they can end up spoiled – this is definitely a mistake I’ve made in the past! lol.
