What are Chakras?

The word “chakra” translates to “wheel” or “disk” in Sanskrit.

Chakra teachings originate in ancient Indian spiritual traditions, particularly within Hinduism and Tantric Yoga, where the movement of life force energy, known as prana, through the body is believed to influence overall well-being.

As well as a physical body, we also have a subtle body. The subtle body can be described as the physical body’s energetic extension or counterpart and a bridge that connects the physical and the spiritual realms.

While our physical body relates to the tangible, visible aspects of our being, which we perceive through our senses, the subtle body encompasses the mind, emotions, and energy. It is where our past experiences, traumas and memories are processed and held, shaping how we feel, respond, and experience life.

The subtle body is where nadis and chakras reside.

Nadis, translated as “channel” or “flow” in Sanskrit, are interconnecting streams in the subtle body that carry prana, nourishing both the physical and spiritual aspects of ourselves. The body is believed to have thousands of nadis, including three main nadis: Ida, Pingala and Sushumna.

Ida = located on the left of the body, associated with lunar or feminine energy

Pingala = located on the right of the body, associated with solar or masculine energy

Sushumna = along the spine from the base to the crown of the head, connects the 7 main energy centres or chakras

The sushumna nadi runs centre along the spine with Ida on the left and Pingala on the right. As Ida and Pingala nadis flow upward, they weave around the Sushumna, with all 3 nadis intersecting at specific points along the spine until they rise and meet at the third eye.

Chakras can be described as spinning vortices of energy where prana gathers and flows throughout the body. Through these energy centres, energy moves between the subtle body and the physical body, helping to regulate how we experience life.

They serve as energetic gateways that receive energy from your environment and your internal state, process it and express it outward. This outward expression shows in your emotions, behaviours, mental state and overall health. The condition of the chakras, therefore, influences how we experience and react to the world around us.

In the body, there are many chakras, including minor chakras in the hands, feet and ears. There are also transpersonal chakras, such as the earth star chakra beneath the feet and the soul star chakra above the head.

In this post, we will be focusing on the following seven main chakras that run along the spine:

  1. Muladhara (Root Chakra)
  2. Svadhisthana (Sacral Chakra)
  3. Manipura (Solar Plexus Chakra)
  4. Anahata (Heart Chakra)
  5. Vishuddha (Throat Chakra)
  6. Ajna (Third Eye Chakra)
  7. Sahasrara (Crown Chakra)

Each of these seven chakras governs a different area of your life. The chakras process energy connected to the areas they are linked to and influence such areas, for example, creativity, communication, intuition, or spiritual awareness.

Chakras are also linked to different parts of the physical body. The physical body and subtle body are constantly influencing one another. Physical health and lifestyle factors such as stress, lack of rest, poor nutrition, or limited movement can disrupt the flow of prana through the subtle body, leading to imbalance within the chakras.

At the same time, the state of the subtle body can also influence the physical body. Unprocessed emotions, prolonged stress, or mental patterns can create energetic blockages within the chakras, which may be reflected physically as tension, fatigue, or discomfort in corresponding areas of the body.

This reflects the idea that energetic balance and physical well-being are connected. By supporting both the physical body and the subtle body, chakra balancing practices aim to restore harmony, balance, and the natural flow of energy throughout the entire system.

When prana flows freely through the chakras, the chakras are in a balanced state, supporting mental clarity, and emotional and physical well-being.

Chakras can also become blocked, meaning the energy flow is restricted. They can also have too much energy flowing through them, which is known as an overactive chakra.

For example:

  • A blocked heart chakra may look like a fear of intimacy
  • An overactive heart chakra may look like codependency and a lack of healthy boundaries in relationships

When the chakras are out of balance, the flow of prana becomes restricted or excessive, which impacts emotional, mental, physical, and spiritual well-being.

Through Chakra balancing practices, you can restore the balanced flow of prana, bringing balance, harmony and clarity.

In the next section, we explore the seven chakras and beginner-friendly practices to support chakra balancing.

Chakra Balancing Practices

Chakra balancing is all about supporting the flow of energy through your subtle body, helping you feel more aligned, grounded, and present.

In this section, we discuss practical tips and tools for chakra balancing that you can use across all chakras to restore balance and harmony.

1. Essential Oils

Choose an essential oil that corresponds with the chakra you want to work with.

Take your chosen essential oil and:

  • Use in a diffuser
  • Apply diluted in a carrier oil to pulse points
  • Inhale directly
  • Add a few drops to bath salts and add to your bath water for a calming soak

2. Crystal Healing

Choose a crystal that is associated with the chakra(s) you want to balance.

  • Hold the crystal while meditating
  • Place the crystals over or near the chakras
  • Carry it with you or wear it as jewellery

3. Visualisation

During meditation, focus on the chakra and imagine a spinning light in the colour that is associated with that specific chakra.

For example: Place your awareness on the throat area and imagine a spinning blue ball of energy flowing freely.

4. Yoga

Practice a specific yoga pose that is associated with the chakra you want to restore balance with or create a yoga sequence that targets each of the seven main chakras.

5. Journal Prompts

Reflect on questions, emotions, or intentions tied to each chakra. Explore or create journal prompts for each character to delve further into each energy centre.

Use this journaling as a tool to help release mental blocks, clarify your feelings, and bring insight into patterns that may be affecting your energy.

6. Affirmations

Use positive affirmations to bring balance. Speaking, thinking or writing affirmations aligned with each chakra helps reprogram the mind and energy system toward clarity, confidence, and flow.

7. Sound Healing

Use sound healing to support energetic balance and relaxation:

  • Listen to frequencies or sound baths associated with different chakras
  • Use singing bowls, music, or chanting (such as mantra repetition)
  • Focus on how the vibrations feel within your body

Sound can help calm the mind, shift your state, and support the natural flow of energy through your chakras.

8. Breathwork

Use breathing techniques to regulate and move energy through the body.

  • Practice slow, deep breathing
  • Try alternate nostril breathing for balance
  • Focus your breath into specific areas of the body

Breathwork helps calm the nervous system and supports the flow of prana through the chakras.

9. Meditation

Set aside time for stillness and awareness.

  • Focus on your breath or a specific chakra
  • Imagine breathing into a specific chakra
  • Observe your thoughts without judgment
  • Use guided meditations for chakra balancing

Meditation helps you tune into your subtle body and bring awareness to areas that may need balance.

10. Nature Connection

Spending time in nature helps naturally ground, regulate and reset your energy.

  • Walk outdoors or sit in a natural space
  • Connect with the earth, sunlight, or fresh air
  • Be present with your surroundings

Connecting with nature’s natural frequency helps regulate your energy system and supports overall chakra balancing.

11. Mindful Lifestyle Habits

Your daily habits play a huge role in your energetic balance.

  • Get enough rest and sleep
  • Nourish your body with balanced foods
  • Limit overstimulation and create moments of stillness
  • Practice mindfulness in your daily routine

Small, consistent habits support long-term balance across all chakras.

By integrating these practices into your daily life, you create a holistic chakra balancing routine that addresses your energy, emotions, and physical body simultaneously.

FAQ – Chakra Balancing

What is chakra balancing, and why is it important?

Chakra balancing is the practice of restoring the free flow of energy (prana) through your chakras. Balanced chakras support emotional stability, physical health, mental clarity, and overall wellbeing.

Which chakra should I begin with?

Starting with your root chakra and working your way up ensures a stable foundation for your chakra balancing practice.

How long does it take to balance my chakras?

Everyone’s energy system is unique, so it varies. Some people feel shifts immediately after meditation, yoga, or journaling, while others notice gradual improvements over weeks of consistent practice.

Can I balance all chakras at once?

Many practices—yoga flow, visualisation and meditation—work on multiple chakras simultaneously. You can also focus on one chakra at a time if you feel a particular area needs extra attention.

Do I need crystals, oils, or special tools to balance chakras?

Not at all! Tools like crystals and essential oils can enhance focus and intention, but the most important part is your awareness, intention, and consistent practice.

How do I know if a chakra is balanced or blocked?

Notice your emotions, behaviours, and physical sensations. Signs of imbalance might include anxiety, creative blocks, communication struggles, or physical tension. A balanced chakra generally feels energised, clear, and aligned. Explore signs of balance and imbalance throughout the chakras, do any resonate?

Extra Tips for Chakra Balancing:

  • Start small: Even 5–10 minutes of focused meditation or journaling per day can help
  • Consistency matters: Try consistent daily or weekly rituals to help maintain energy flow
  • Combine practices: Explore and customise your practice. Pair visualisation with affirmations, or yoga with crystals, for a deeper effect
  • Tune into your body: Notice tension, sensations, or emotions—they’re signals from your subtle body
  • Keep a journal: Track patterns, insights, and progress in your chakra balancing journey

Final note: Chakra balancing is a personal and intuitive journey. Small, intentional practices consistently applied create long-term harmony in mind, body and spirit.
