If you feel tired all the time, it might be what you’re giving your energy away to.

Everything in this Universe is energy. Energy cannot be created or destroyed. It is constantly moving, transforming, and transferring between you and the world around you. Through your thoughts, your focus, your conversations and your environment—energy flows.

Energy takers and givers influence our energy, and our energy communicates with us. Have you ever left a hangout with someone you love and felt lighter, refreshed and uplifted? Or scrolled for a little too long and felt overstimulated, anxious or disconnected? That’s the difference between energy takers vs energy givers.

Some experiences pour into you. Others slowly drain your energy.

Setting energetic boundaries is a way of protecting your peace. Knowing your energy takers vs energy givers isn’t just self-awareness. It’s showing up for yourself. It’s self-respect. And it’s taking control of your sovereignty.

It looks like choosing where your time, attention, and energy are invested, instead of giving them away unconsciously. It’s setting boundaries that reflect what you need, making the conscious decision to step back when something feels off—even if you can’t fully explain it—and intentionally infusing your day with moments that nourish you and uplift you.

It’s understanding that your energy is sacred. And that your peace is not something to be negotiated.

Realising that not everything is worth giving your energy to, and learning to act on that consistently, is the foundation for protecting your peace.

 

What Are Energy Givers?

 

Energy givers look like anything from relationships to practices and environments that fill you up and nourish your energy instead of draining it. They leave you feeling more alive, recharged and centred.

1. Healthy relationships — whether it be friends, family, mentors, or partners.

2. Creative outlets — writing, painting, movement, or exploring music.

3. Connecting with nature — morning walks, sunset views, or time spent in a garden.

4. Daily practices that support your wellbeing — meditation, journaling, yoga, or a calming morning routine full of your favourite wellness rituals.

5. Sunlight — regulating your circadian rhythm, boosting vitamin D and increasing energy.

6. Being present — detaching from the mind and being fully rooted in the present moment.

7. Healthy foods — nourishing foods that support your body and nourish you from within.

8. Aligned environments — spaces that feel safe, supportive and like you actually want to be there.

9. Boundaries — saying no when you mean it and honouring your boundaries without guilt.

10. Intentional self-care – choosing self-care rituals that restore you.

 

What Are Energy Takers?

 

Energy takers, on the other hand, are subtle but powerful. They drain you, often without you noticing until it’s too late. They don’t always look negative, and they aren’t all inherently bad. A lot of activities that we may consider energy takers are totally fine when experienced in moderation and in a healthy balance with energy givers (think social media or junk food, for example).

 

Energy takers can make you feel like:

  • You feel emotionally or mentally exhausted afterwards.
  • Your mind is racing, or you feel tense, anxious, or frustrated.
  • Your energy feels scattered.
  • You feel like you gave more than you received.
  • You feel a lingering heaviness or discomfort.

 

Energy Takers Examples:

 

1. Unhealthy relationships — connections that feel one-sided, unsupportive or unsafe.

2. Overthinking loops — being stuck in thought patterns that make you anxious and don’t actually solve any issues.

3. Poor boundaries — saying yes to everything (especially when you’d rather say no) and not stating what you need.

4. Scrolling too much — doomscrolling, consuming too much heavy news and social media.

5. Not enough sleep — running on low energy and not giving your body the proper rest it needs.

6. Too much junk food — eating too much food that leaves you feeling sluggish or has you in a sugar crash by 4 pm feeling drained.

7. Toxic environments — spaces that feel tense, chaotic and just not like you.

8. Gossip — conversations that focus on negativity and tearing others down.

9. Comparison — comparing your journey to others (especially when it’s on the internet).

10. Old patterns — habits or behaviours that no longer serve your growth and happiness, but feel familiar.

 

How to Identify Energy Takers vs Energy Givers

 

Self-awareness is key. Take a step back and honestly audit your life.

 

Tip 1: Track your energy

 

Keep a small journal or note on your phone. Each day, reflect on:

  • What made me feel happy, peaceful or energised today?
  • What left me feeling anxious or drained?

 

Tip 2: Evaluate your relationships

 

Ask yourself:

  • Who do I feel calm and safe around?
  • Who do I feel like I can be myself around?
  • Who leaves me anxious, exhausted, or frustrated?
  • Do the people in my life honour my boundaries?

Ask yourself:

  • Which daily rituals and habits make you feel more balanced, centred, or alive?
  • Which habits and behaviours drain your energy and make you feel down or misaligned?

 

10 Ways to Protect Your Energy

 

1. Define your boundaries and set them – You’re allowed to say no without overexplaining yourself. Protecting your peace is not selfish.

2. Limit energy takers – Invest less time in draining relationships, environments and habits. Cut out what doesn’t feel right to you.

3. Prioritise energy givers – Spend more time with people, practices and spaces that uplift you.

4. Digital detox – Set intentional times for putting down your phone. Take breaks from consuming too much content. Silence your notifications when you’d prefer some quiet time.

5. Morning rituals – Start your day with a routine that makes room for self-care rituals, even if it’s just adding in 10 minutes of something that brings you peace and joy.

6. Nature – Walk, breathe, and refresh in natural spaces.

7. Mindful pauses – Take time throughout your day to come back into stillness. Connect with your breath. Observe your thoughts passing by without reacting to them.

8. Curate your environment – Your environment matters when it comes to protecting your peace. Surround yourself with colours, scents, items and textures that inspire calm and feel authentic to you.

9. Release guilt – You don’t have to justify why you protect your energy.

10. Practice gratitude for energy givers – Acknowledge what fills you up; these gentle reminders reinforce positivity and refresh your perspectives.

 

Self-Care Is About Subtraction Too

 

Self-care isn’t just about adding: face masks, cosy baths, morning journal prompts. There’s power in subtracting.

  • Remove what exhausts you.
  • Step back from unhealthy dynamics.
  • Release habits, routines, or relationships that no longer align with what you want.

Sometimes, self-care is silencing the notifications, ditching a habit, or refusing to engage in drama.

Here are small, simple ways to check in with your energy daily:

1. Morning check-in– Ask yourself: “What do I need today?”

2. Notice how you feel – Check in with how you feel throughout your day. Reflect on what’s making you feel good or draining you; adjust accordingly.

3. Evening reflection – Journal about what you were grateful for. Consider asking yourself what improvements could have been made.

4. Call back your energy – At the end of your day or in moments where you feel scattered or heavy, call back your energy and release what isn’t yours.

Repeat this mantra: I now call back all of my energy from all people, places and things known and unknown to me. I release and return to the original sources all energy that is not my own.
